How Pretium Academy handles your data

What we collect, why we collect it, how long we keep it, and the rights you can exercise at any time.

Data we collect

Account data: your name, email address, and hashed authentication credentials managed by our identity provider. We never store plaintext passwords.
Academic records: course enrollments, lesson progress, quiz attempts and grades, assignment submissions and grades, and instructor feedback.
Communications: discussion posts, announcements, and private messages sent within the Academy.
Faculty records: onboarding profiles, contracts, and pay records for instructors, held in restricted storage.
Security logs: audit events (such as sign-ins, grade changes, and record access) including IP address and browser user agent.

Why we collect it

Data is used solely to deliver the learning service: authenticating you, recording academic progress, enabling communication between students and faculty, paying instructors, and protecting the platform through security auditing. We do not sell personal data, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties beyond the infrastructure providers that run the service.

Retention

Academic records (grades, submissions, and the audit trail that protects their integrity) are retained in line with educational record-keeping obligations. Personal identifiers are kept only while your account exists; when an account is removed we anonymize it - the name and email are irreversibly replaced - while the academic record itself is preserved without identifying you.

Your education-record rights (FERPA)

Only you and the course staff assigned to your courses can read your grades, and each grade access is audited. You may inspect your education records at any time, request correction of inaccurate records, and request an accounting of disclosures. Contact us using the address below to exercise these rights.

Export your data

While signed in, you can download a complete machine-readable copy of your own data - profile, enrollments, progress, grades, submissions metadata, posts, messages, and notifications - from the API endpoint GET /privacy/export. Other people who appear in your export (for example, message counterparties) are shown by display name only.

Erasure and anonymization

To request removal of your account, contact us at the address below. An administrator will anonymize the account: your name and email are permanently removed and replaced with non-identifying placeholders, and the account is disabled. Academic records are retained without personal identifiers, as required for educational record-keeping.

No accounts for children under 13

Pretium Academy is not directed at children. Registration requires an attestation that you are at least 13 years old, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
